1st XV Coaching Announcement

Furnace United RFC is excited to announce that Chris ‘Vinnie’ Jones will be taking on the role of forwards player coach for the forthcoming season. He will be taking over from his father Mike, who has done a great job in improving our young pack over the last 12 months. The progress made, especially at scrum time, in such a short period is a credit to his hard work and coaching ability.

Chris rejoins “The Cherries” after a successful spell with local division 1 side Felinfoel RFC. In that period he has developed greatly as both a player and leader and we are certain he will flourish in his new coaching role. This exciting signing demonstrates how far Furnace has come over the past couple of seasons and also its ambition for the future.

Comfortable right across the front row, Chris’ vocal leadership qualities and willingness to lead from the front should stand him in good stead on the pitch. Whilst still in its infancy, his coaching career has gotten off to a promising start with players responding well to his input in sessions. He is excited to bring in some new ideas but also get back to basics with some elements of our forward play.

As a club we would like to say a huge thank-you to outgoing coach Mike Jones. He has served the club magnificently over the years as a player and coach at both youth and senior level. This is demonstrated by the fact he has coached all three of Furnace’s current coaching staff at some point in their playing careers. He has been a fantastic mentor for coaches and players alike and his good work will be carried on by his eldest son.

The first official game under this new regime will be this coming Saturday when we travel to St Clears RFC. This will be a squad game with everyone who is fit and available guaranteed game time before our league campaign begins. We would also encourage any ex-players and supporters to travel with the squad and lend your support. For more information including bus times please get in touch with one of the coaching staff.
