From next week onwards Monday’s training sessions with the senior and youth squads will be entirely games based with the focus being on increasing participation and enjoyment levels. That means no warm-ups, no drills, no unit skills, no fitness... Just games!
The games themselves will vary and could include anything from touch rugby to Aussie Rules to dare I say it... the dreaded Wendyball (aka football). I’d encourage all past/present Furnace players to make the effort to attend. Even if you can’t commit to week in, week out training and playing you can now turn up on a Monday knowing what’s on the cards.
The same goes for players from other clubs or people just wanting to try something new. Everybody is welcome, regardless of ability levels. There will be no pressure from coaches or players to sign for the club or play for us on Saturdays. The same cannot be said if you turn up on a Wednesday though as this is when we will be looking at the technical and tactical side of our game!
The main aim of this is to get people off their sofas, having fun and enjoying rugby again. There have been some sad stories this season of local clubs folding and lots of teams are struggling with numbers. Playing competitive rugby also brings with it the pressure of winning, performing well individually and the risk of injuries. This is a chance to forget all those pressures and just get back to why most people actually play rugby at grass roots level... TO HAVE FUN!
Training will run from 6.30pm until 8pm and there will be no pressure to stay for the entirety of the session. It can be tough coming into a new environment but Furnace as a whole (Paul the barman aside) is an extremely warm and welcoming place. Spread the word amongst your friends and hopefully we will see some new and old faces next week.
